The President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili intends to closely coordinate with the future Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili on the issues of integration into NATO, says the Head of National Security Council of Georgia, Giga Bokeria, told journalists at a short briefing in the State Chancellery after meeting with PM nominee Bidzina Ivanishvili at his business center.
“The President of Georgia and the future Prime Minister today had phone conversations with the NATO Secretary General and these issues were the topic of discussion of my meeting with Mr. Ivanishvili,” said Bokeria.
He once again emphasized that there are “fundamental and significant” differences between president Saakashvili’s team and Ivanishvili’s political forces, and those differences will “probably not disappear”, but the cooperation about integration issues, will be “close and deep.”
“As for the security and defense of the country from external threats, maintenance and strengthening of our political course towards NATO integration - we will do our utmost to have a close cooperation and will spare no effort to contribute to the protection of Georgia’s interests,” Bokeria stressed.
Giga Bokeria said that NATO Secretary General had a telephone conversation both with the President of Georgia and future prime minister and Mr. Ivanishvili reasserted his commitment to maintain Georgia’s course toward NATO.
The President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili today also commented on integration issues. He made a televised speech and said that there are no personal issues between Georgia and Russia and the illusions that the problems with Russia are caused by personality of certain political leader in Georgia will disappear after these elections.
As the Head of the State said the problem is fundamental and for some it is caused by the independence of Georgia. “Thus for strengthening independence of Georgia it is necessary to intensify Euro-Atlantic course. This course has no alternative for the future of the country, no matter who is in the government,” said the President.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
